Car insurance is essential protection on the road. It can also be expensive. You need it, but you might not be able to afford it. Is there any way to reduce those costs? Different insurance providers do offer various types of auto insurance discounts. Here’s a rundown of insurance breaks you might be able to take advantage of.
Driver Safety Discounts
If you’re at fault in an accident, your premiums usually go up. However, if you can prove to be a safe driver, and thus less of a risk, your insurance can go down. For instance, some providers will cut your rates if you can go several years with no accidents on your record.
A few insurance companies also give discounts based on your actions. Do you drive below the speed limit? Make your passengers buckle up? You could save money. Likewise if you just don’t drive your car as often. The less you’re on the road, the less of a chance you have to get into an accident. So if you can cut the amount you drive to 7,500 miles per year or below, you may see discounts of up to 20%.
Driver Status Discounts
There are certain factors that cause drivers to pay more for insurance. Age is one of the biggest factors. Younger drivers, who have just gotten their licenses, are considered bigger risks, and have to pay more. However, there are certain discounts that can offset those costs.
If the driver is a good student, they can provide their academic records to their insurance provider, and may be eligible for a reduced rate. Or if they’re going to college away from home, and left their car behind, they can reduce their liability insurance premiums, as they’re not using their car as often. Finally, if the driver isn’t a student, but is in the military, they may also qualify for a discount.
Drivers over 55 also often pay more as they get older. However, many insurance companies offer discounts for those drivers as well. If they take a certification test to prove that they’re still a safe and reliable driver, it can mean reduced premiums.
If your car has certain features that can reduce your risk, you may be able to qualify for certain discounts. For instance, anti-lock brakes and airbags can both knock a little bit off your premiums.
Getting additional anti-theft measures installed on your car, beyond just an alarm system, can qualify you for a discount as well. A passive alarm, which arms automatically when you exit the car, or passive disabling device, which won’t allow the car to be driven unless the specially programmed key is present, may qualify you for the discount. A hood lock, to prevent thieves from getting at your engine, can get you a discount as well. Be careful, though. Some of these features are expensive, and the discounts are usually fairly small. Do some research first, to be sure it’s worth it.
There are a number of other potential auto insurance discounts and breaks you may qualify for. Talk to your insurance company and find out ways you can save. With a little planning and effort, you can continue to have great coverage, without paying an arm and a leg.
